Chiang Mai is compact and easy to navigate. Most expats live in or near these popular areas:
The trendiest area with countless cafes, restaurants, boutiques, and co-working spaces. Very walkable and close to Maya Mall and Chiang Mai University.
Inside the ancient moat and walls, surrounded by temples. Very traditional feel with guesthouses, local restaurants, and the famous Sunday Walking Street market.
North of the Old City, this area has a more local feel with lower prices. Good for those who want to integrate more with Thai daily life.
South of the city, popular with families and those wanting larger homes with gardens. Near Royal Flora Ratchaphruek and many furniture/craft shops.
In the foothills north of the city. Beautiful mountain views, cooler temperatures, and close to elephant sanctuaries and nature attractions.
Near the famous Night Bazaar, with easy access to shopping, restaurants, and the Ping River. Good mix of tourists and locals.
Chiang Mai has several excellent hospitals with English-speaking staff. While not as extensive as Bangkok, healthcare quality is very good and significantly cheaper.

📍 Outside Old City (North)Public teaching hospital affiliated with Chiang Mai University. Very affordable and has many specialists, though can be crowded.
📍 Near CMUGood private option with lower prices than the premium hospitals. Adequate for most routine care and minor procedures.
