Phuket has distinct areas with very different vibes. Most retirees avoid the tourist party areas and settle in quieter parts of the island:
The southern tip of Phuket is the expat favorite. Rawai has a laid-back fishing village feel with excellent seafood restaurants. Nai Harn has one of Phuket's most beautiful beaches.
Central location with easy access to the whole island. More local feel with shopping centers, Big C, and Chalong Circle. Good value for money.
Two adjacent beaches on the west coast. More touristy but family-friendly with good restaurants, hotels, and a nice beach vibe without the Patong chaos.
Quiet beach area between Patong and Surin. More upscale with luxury villas and condos. Home to Café del Mar and high-end restaurants.
The historic old town with charming Sino-Portuguese architecture, local restaurants, and the most affordable rents. Not on the beach but full of character.
Home to the Laguna resort complex with golf courses, luxury hotels, and high-end villas. Very international but comes with premium pricing.
Patong: The main tourist party zone. Loud, crowded, expensive, and not suitable for peaceful retirement living. Visit for nightlife but don't live there.
Phuket has good healthcare facilities, particularly Bangkok Hospital Phuket which is JCI-accredited. For complex procedures, some expats travel to Bangkok.
